Reversaru RGBs: A Better Way to Run the Audi 012 Transmission in a VW T3

For years, one of the challenges of using the Audi 012 transmission in a rear-engine vehicle like the Volkswagen T3 Vanagon has been getting the drivetrain to operate in the correct direction.

Traditionally, the Audi 012 transmission has needed to be flipped upside down to make it work in a rear-engine application. While this can solve the rotational direction issue, it introduces another significant problems: CV joint angles and oil leaks.

With the development of the Reversaru Reverse Drive Reduction Gearbox (RGB), there is now another way to approach this conversion.

Keep the transmission the right way up

The Reversaru RGB reverses the drive externally, allowing the Audi 012 transmission to remain in its standard, factory-correct upright orientation rather than being mounted upside down.

This is a significant advantage because the transmission can retain its intended orientation while the RGB takes care of reversing the drive direction to suit the rear-engine layout of the T3 Vanagon.

Why flipping the transmission upside down causes problems

One of the biggest challenges with flipping a transmission upside down is the resulting position of the output shafts, not to mention oil leaks from breathers.

The position of the CV outputs determines the angles at which the CV joints operate. When the transmission is inverted, the output shafts sit in a different position relative to the wheel hubs and suspension.

This creates acute CV angles, particularly on lifted vehicles where the suspension geometry already places additional demands on the CV joints.

Acute CV angles can contribute to increased joint operating angles, premature splitting of the rubber CV boots, additional stress on drivetrain components and reduced CV joint life, especially when the vehicle is travelling over rough terrain or operating at increased suspension heights.

Getting the transmission and output shafts into the correct position from the beginning makes a substantial difference to the overall drivetrain layout.

Better CV angles with the Reversaru RGB

By keeping the Audi 012 transmission upright and reversing the drive externally, the Reversaru RGB allows the transmission outputs to remain in a more favourable position for the T3 installation.

This helps achieve CV angles that are closer to the intended drivetrain geometry, rather than introducing the compromises associated with an inverted transmission.

Keep in mind that the RGB's can be clocked or rotated on their brackets so if you have a lifted or lowered van you will always be able to obtain optimum CV angle regardless of the height of your vehicle. compared to a 012 transmission mounted upside down, the RGB's are an absolute game changer!!!
